Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 13, 2026
This policy explains how Academia Tocqueville collects and uses personal data through the website academia-tocqueville.org, and what rights you have over your data. We collect only the data we need to run the seminar and to keep in touch with those who wish to hear from us.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is Academia Tocqueville, a French non-profit association (association loi 1901), 107, rue de Sèvres, 75006 Paris, France. For any question about your data, write to contact@academia-tocqueville.org.
2. What data we collect and why
Newsletter
When you subscribe through a “Stay in touch” form, we collect your first name, last name, email address and, if you provide it, your affiliation. We use this data only to send you news about Academia Tocqueville, such as calls for applications and program announcements. The legal basis is your consent, which you give by ticking the consent box and confirming your subscription through the link we send you by email. You can withdraw your consent at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of each newsletter or by writing to us.
Our newsletter is sent through Mailchimp, which may record whether an email has been opened and which links have been clicked. We use this information only in aggregate, to improve our communications.
Contact form
When you write to us through the contact form, we collect your name, phone number, email address and message. We use them only to answer your request. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in replying to the people who contact us.
Applications
Applications are sent to us by email. They include the statement of interest, CV, references and letters of recommendation that you or your referees provide. We use them only to select participants and, for admitted participants, to organize the seminar. The legal basis is the steps taken at your request before your participation in the program.
Technical data
When a form is submitted, the website records the date, the page, your IP address and the type of browser used. We keep this information to protect the site against spam and abuse, on the basis of our legitimate interest.
3. Who receives your data
Your data is accessed only by the members of the Academia Tocqueville team who need it, including the selection committee for applications. We do not sell or rent your data. We rely on the following service providers, who process data on our behalf and under our instructions:
- our website hosting provider, which stores the website and the data submitted through its forms;
- Intuit Inc. (Mailchimp), which manages our newsletter list and sends the newsletter. Mailchimp is located in the United States. Intuit participates in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which provides an adequate level of protection under European law for transfers to certified companies.
4. How long we keep your data
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. Addresses that do not confirm their subscription are deleted.
- Contact messages: up to three years after our last exchange.
- Applications: for applicants who are not admitted, up to two years after the selection decision; for admitted participants, for the duration of the program and, afterwards, the contact details needed to keep in touch with our alumni, unless you object.
- Technical data recorded with form submissions: up to one year.
5. Cookies and embedded content
This website does not use advertising or audience measurement cookies. Some pages include videos hosted on YouTube. When you view or play these videos, YouTube (Google) may set cookies and collect data about your visit, under its own privacy policy.
6. Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the French Data Protection Act, you have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw your consent at any time. You may also give instructions on what should happen to your data after your death. To exercise these rights, write to contact@academia-tocqueville.org. We will reply within one month.
If you believe your rights have not been respected, you may lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority, the CNIL (www.cnil.fr).
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in our activities or in the law. The date of the latest update appears at the top of this page.
